Abstract

The reality of the position of the female head of the family (Pekka) in Indonesia is still not fully recognized. Society has not been able to fully accept the status of women as heads of families socially. This condition occurs because the female head of the family has a dual role, as mother, head of the family, backbone of the breadwinner, educating and raising children, and decision maker in the family. This study aims to determine participatory communication carried out by women heads of families through entrepreneurship. This study uses self-concept theory (female heads of families who have awareness of themselves who have no income to support the family and are associated with negative self-concept into positive self-concept). Qualitative type research method with phenomenological approach, becomes the right approach to examine more deeply about one's experience of a phenomenon. The research technique used was participant observation, and interviews with seven research informants. The result of this study is the success of participatory communication carried out by women heads of families for family economic independence through entrepreneurship and following the Pekka community as the second home of the female head of the family to process becoming independent.
