Abstract

This research explores the crucial role of screenwriters in the production of documentary films that highlight the lives of football supporters in Indonesia. The focus is on three main stages: pre-production, production, and post-production. In the pre-production stage, the screenwriter creates ideas, conducts research, assembles the storyline, creates a logline, storyline, treatment, and participates in planning the timeline and budget. Next, at the production stage, the screenwriter prepares the final script as a reference for shooting by the DOP, and also prepares an interview guide for the interviewee. In the post-production stage, they create an editing script, combining the final script and an interview guide for the editor as an editing guide. This research highlights that screenwriters are the backbone in the documentation and administration aspects of films. His role as a researcher and production guide was crucial, especially in detailing questions, recording interviews, and turning them into transcripts that were useful in script editing. The conclusion is that screenwriters in making documentary films help with all the correspondence and paper work. The term author or writer is more appropriate in the role of documentary film production in terms of providing guidance and also being a researcher. A note writer creates a list of questions, records the results of the interview and converts it into a verbatim transcript to be used as a guide in script editing.
