Abstract

The high incidence of morbidity and mortality opportunistic infections among patients with HIV/AIDS, such as in central nervous system (CNS) occurs due to the mechanism of immune deficiency by HIV infection against cells with CD4 owned by immune cells. This study was carried out with a focus to determine the presence and magnitude risk about the correlation of CD4 count in HIV/AIDS patients and central nervous system infection incident in Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital from 2020–2022. A cross-sectional with observational analytic study utilized by a simple random sampling technique on the population of HIV/AIDS patients from January 2020 to December 2022 and obtained 80 medical records. Of the 80 subjects, 16.3% suffered central nervous system (CNS) infections, consisting of 76.9% cerebral toxoplasmosis and 23.1% brain abscess. Dual-variable examination by Fisher's exact test in lieu of the Chi-Square test with analysis magnification of risk by Prevalence Odds Ratio (POR) indicated p = 0.000 (<0.05) and OR = 11.455, CI 95% = 2.98-43.89. From this research outcome as a basis, it can be inferred that there is a significant correlation between CD4 count in HIV/AIDS patients and central nervous system infection incident with an 11.455 times higher risk for CD4 count <200 cells/mm3.
