Abstract

The prevalence of hypertension in Indonesia based on blood pressure measurements reached 34.11% in 2018. According to the National and Sub-National Burden of Disease Analysis in 2017, hypertension is the dominant risk factor for coronary heart disease, which currently is the first cause of death in Indonesia. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between general and central obesity with hypertension among individuals aged 25-44 years in Indonesia. This research method is analytical observational with a cross-sectional study and used secondary data from Indonesian National Basic Health Research (2018). The sample size was 35258 people using the total sampling technique. The data analysis used was Chi-Square. The results of bivariate analysis showed that there was a relationship between obesity without central obesity (p=0.015; PR 1.106; 95% CI 1.023-1.196), central obesity without obesity (p=0.000; PR 1.088; 95% CI 1.047-1.130), and combined obesity (p=0.000; PR 1.961; 95% CI 1.907-2.016) with hypertension. Suggestion: Individuals who are at risk group of hypertensions should adopt a healthy lifestyle and prevention of hypertension, while individuals with normal nutritional status are recommended to maintain a balanced nutritional intake and measure body weight and abdominal circumference frequently as a way to prevent obesity and central obesity..
