Abstract

The tight learning activities that are owned by medical students make these students adopt a sedentary lifestyle, so that students tend to experience a decrease in physical activity. Myokine synthesis will change if there is a decrease in muscle mass caused by a decrease in physical activity and will have a negative impact on the brain, such as impaired cognitive function. This study aims to determine the relationship between muscle mass and cognitive function among medical students. This study used cross-sectional with the sample taken entirely (total sampling) from 90 students who met the research criteria. This study used the Tanita Medical Body Composition Analyzer (MC-980MA Plus) and the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST) questionnaire. The results showed that 38 (42.2%) subjects had low muscle mass, 47 (52.2%) subjects had normal muscle mass, and 5 (5.6%) subjects had high muscle mass. The results of the cognitive function examination obtained a score with a median of 61 for low muscle mass, 64 for normal muscle mass, and 81 for high muscle mass. The results of the Kruskal-Wallis test showed differences in cognitive function between muscle mass groups (p = 0.023). Spearman's test results show a relationship between muscle mass and cognitive function with a weak correlation (p = 0.008; r = 0.279). The higher the muscle, the higher the cognitive function.
