Abstract
Dysentery is an infectious disease with symptoms of diarrhea accompanied by blood and mucus. Shigella species are the main cause of bacillary dysentery with Shigella dysenteriae as the cause with the most serious symptoms among other Shigella species. Lemon is known to contain secondary metabolites with antibacterial properties. The purpose of this study was to compare the antibacterial activity of juice and lemon peel extract (Citrus limon) in inhibiting the growth of S.dysenteriae. In this study, the design used was experimental with the well diffusion method on Mueller Hinton Agar (MHA) media used to identify the clear zone of bacterial growth around the well. The results showed the average inhibition zone of lemon juice at a concentration of 25%; 50%; and 75% respectively by 21.18 mm; 23.8 mm; and 26.98 mm while for lemon peel extract, at a concentration of 25%; 50%; and 75% respectively 10.74 mm; 15.08 mm; and 19.22 mm. Statistical analysis test results (p<0.05) showed that the difference in concentration resulted in differences in inhibitory power and the higher the sample concentration, the greater the inhibition against S.dysenteriae. The results of the independent t test (p<0.05) showed that there was a difference in activity between the juice and lemon peel extract at a concentration of 25%; 50%; and 75% against S.dysenteriae. Lemon juice has higher antibacterial activity than lemon peel extract against S.dysenteriae. These results may be due to differences in the diffusion ability of compounds contained in juice and lemon peel extract to penetrate the bacterial cell membrane.
