Abstract
Based on Basic Health Research (RISKESDAS) data in 2013, coronary heart disease in Indonesia based on doctor's diagnosis/symptoms was 1.5% or around 2,650,340 people. The basic problem that can cause death in heart disease is the supply of oxygen to the myocardium due to atherosclerosis blockage. One of the main causes of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease is hyperlipidemia. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of parijoto fruit extract on the prevention of atherosclerosis progression in the histopathology of the abdominal aorta in male mice with high fat diet balb/c strain. Methods: A total of 30 round balb/c male mice were divided into six groups, namely normal control, positive control, negative control, treatment 1 (high-fat diet and 11.2 mg/day extract dose), treatment 2 (high-fat diet and 8.4 mg/day extract dose), treatment 3 (high-fat feed and 5.6 mg/day extract dose). Results: analysis of the progression of atherosclerosis in the abdominal aorta of mice using the Kruskal-Wallis test found a significant difference in each group (p=0.003) followed by the Mann-Whitney test in each group. In treatment group 1 and treatment 3 there was no significant difference between the negative control group (p=0.268 & 0.065), but the histopathological picture showed improvement compared to the negative control group. In treatment group 2, the progressivity score was lower than the negative control group (p=0.031) but not better than the positive control group (p=0.228). Conclusion: Parijoto fruit extract (Medinilla speciosa Blume) was the most effective of the 3 doses, namely at a dose of 8.4 mg/20gr/day (treatment group 2) to prevent the progression of abdominal aortic atherosclerosis in mice.
