Abstract

Recent technical advancements are accelerating, resulting in the emergence of increasingly complex and feature-rich social media. The availability of social media is surely easy for people to converse as well as share information very swiftly. The Covid-19 pandemic has greatly raised the need for knowledge and communication, such that social media is extremely needed by the community. However, actual facts demonstrate that there are several impacts that are presented by the transmission of false news or disinformation, one of which is panic buying. This study examines the impact of social media, particularly WhatsApp, on panic buying behavior and relates it to the theory of information integration. This study applies a quantitative research method with an explanatory approach to middleaged housewives in South Jakarta. The sample used by the researcher is 204 participants with preset criteria. This study employs the theory of information integration with data gathering methodologies is a questionnaire/questionnaire. The results of this study were found to be a strong relationship and the influence of the spread of disinformation about Covid-19 in the family Whatsapp group on the panic buying attitude of housewives in South Jakarta which was shown in the correlation test which showed the number 0.872 which can be stated that there is a very close relationship and also the test. the coefficient of determination which shows the number 78.4% which can be interpreted that the researcher's X variable has a strong influence on the researcher's Y variable. This is in line with the concept of information integration theory which states that beliefs and weights in an information can change the attitudes contained in individuals.
