Abstract
This study is a contemporary study that provides an analysis of the role of the 4ocean in addressing the plastic waste crisis in Indonesian ocean for the 2015-2020 period. This study aims to explain the role of 4ocean as an international non-governmental organization in providing effective solutions to the plastic waste crisis in Indonesian ocean, where Indonesia is the top second in the world in terms of the plastic waste crisis in the ocean. This is a proof that Indonesia has not been able to handle the problem of the plastic waste crisis in the ocean independently. Therefore, assistance from other parties such as the 4ocean as an international organization actor is needed in dealing with this problem. The condition of the ocean in Indonesia is very bad with its plastic waste crisis. It became the main inspiration for 4ocean to be established. 4ocean is an international non-governmental organization that is also a social-enterprise that founded in Bali, Indonesia in 2015. The role of this international organization is to provide effective solutions by cleaning 18 million pounds of waste from the oceans and coastlines every year. Marine debris that has been collected is not only piled up into mountains of garbage, but it is transported to warehouses to be sorted by material, type, and colour. All sorted materials are sent to a processing facility where they are washed and shredded into pellets. From there, the pellets are transported to recycling partners who turn them into raw materials for the production of new, eco-friendly, reusable products, such as bracelets, shopping bags and water bottles. This product will be sold to the people in the world so that they can contribute by helping the world to be better. 4ocean also provides full time professional employment opportunities to local communities as ship crew, cleaning, recycling craftsmen in all operations 4ocean performs on a daily basis. This also has a positive impact for the local communities in improving their economic standard. This study was developed based on the framework of a pluralism perspective that is supported by the theory and concept of The Role of International Organization where International Organization became the main actor in International Relations and also supported with Maritime Security and Environmental Security theories. This research leads to qualitative methods and literature studies as sources of information. Keywords: 4ocean, International Organization, Roles, Plastic Waste Crisis, Ocean, Maritime Security, Environment Security, Indonesia.
