Abstract
The United States of America is a country that has the largest economic power in the world today, where the United States uses the power of trade, finance, and other economic instruments to achieve its national interests. Currently, the United States is also participating in the trade agreement that it established in North America, namely the North America Free Trade Agreements (NAFTA). The establishment of NAFTA by the United States and its neighbouring countries is aimed at establishing trade integration that removes all barriers in the North American market. However, in 2016 the direction of the United States' trade policy changed after the appointment of Donald Trump as the 45th US president, where his foreign policy and national interests were populist nationalism. It also changed the direction of US trade to become bilateral-centric. The implementation of Trump's trade policy is in the form of the US withdrawing from the TPP agreement, setting tariffs for protectionism, and also planning to withdraw from the NAFTA agreement. For Trump, the NAFTA agreement harms the US economy, especially on US workforce and jobs. However, in 2017, Trump changed the direction of his policy towards NAFTA, which initially wanted to withdraw but turned into a policy of initiating the renegotiation of the NAFTA agreement. This research will use an explanatory qualitative research method, which will answer the reasons and factors that shape Trump's desire to initiate renegotiation of the NAFTA agreement. This study will also discuss the results of the NAFTA agreement renegotiation process. The results of the renegotiation of the NAFTA agreement, namely the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreements (USMCA) resulted in several changes and the addition of new regulations to modernize trade integration in North America. The USMCA also has several regulations that play a role in creating the United States' regionalism situation in North America and also has several new regulations that have the potential to form a new US geoeconomics order in the international community.
