Abstract
Self-medication is the use of drugs to relieve disease symptoms without doctor's prescription. The practice of self-medication can affect the rationality of the drug treatment. Self-medication that being practiced without the right medicine, diagnosis, and dose is one of the examples of an irrational drug practice. This research aims to determine factors affecting the rationality of cough self-medication in the community of Depok. This was an observational analytic research with cross sectional design. Samples were taken with purposive sampling technique. Instrument that used in this research is questioner. The result of this research showed that there are 20 respondents with rational self-medication behaviour (52,63%). The result of bivariate analysis showed three factors that affect the rationality of cough self-medication, which are family’s earning in a month (0,024), health workers’s support (0,009), and level of knowledge (0,005), and five factors that aren’t affecting the rationality of cough self-medication, which are age (0,632), sex (0,463), education status (0,358), source of information (0,304), and attitude (0,474). Support of health workers is the most influencing factor of the rationality of cough self-medication (OR = 7,335, CI 95%). The health workers’s support has many forms that can affect the rationality of cough self-medication.
