Abstract

Sulu Sea has abundant natural wealth with a strategic location that makes it famous for its benefits and advantages. Flanked by three strategic countries in Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, making it becomes one of the most desirable place to be used and depended on living from its natural products and geographical conditions of the Sulu region as their main source of income. Excessive use of natural resources and geographical conditions in the Sulu region make this region one of the greatest threat-prone areas in Southeast Asia. Threats such as kidnapping, piracy, armed robbery, illegal fishing, over fishing, illegal trade (weapons, drugs, wildlife, logging and humans) and illegal immigrants have connections with each other that can harm and threaten the strategic security of the three countries located surrounding. With this kind of situation, the governments of the three countries formed a trilateral security cooperation consisting of Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines or abbreviated as IndoMalPhi which seeks to protect the tri-border from the threats. Security cooperation is formed to reduce threats that have disrupted regional security. In this journal, I will briefly explain and analyze the threats that occur in the Sulu region, as well as programs of security cooperation carried out by IndoMalPhi trilateral cooperation in 2016-2018 which are considered to be able to bring success in dealing with strategic threats in Sulu.
