Abstract

This study examines how Generation Z (aged 19–24) perceives persuasive communication regarding mental health content on the Instagram account @socialconnect.id. The choice of mental health as the research topic was based on findings regarding the high prevalence of mental health issues in Indonesia and the fact that mental health remains a taboo subject in society. The study employs Braun & Clarke’s thematic analysis method, integrating concepts from Maletzke’s mass communication model, persuasive communication, and perception theory from the psychology of communication. Results from interviews with six informants indicate that the persuasive content on @socialconnect.id acts as a stimulus in shaping Generation Z's perceptions. This stimulus arises from engaging headlines, visual appeal, simple language, the message's relevance to the informants' situations, and the credibility of the information; perception formation is further influenced by internal factors, situational factors, and the target audience's sense of personal connection or similarity to the content. All six informants experienced shifts in their mental health knowledge, self-awareness, emotional validation, and empathy, as well as changes in attitudes—such as viewing practices like journaling, setting boundaries, and visiting a psychologist as acceptable rather than taboo. Consequently, a positive perception of mental health content was formed through a dynamic process involving media content, the role of media, and the individuals' internal states in interpreting the received stimuli.
