Abstract
This study examines the phenomenon of consumerism among TikTok users. According to Baudrillard, consumerism is a condition in which individuals consume objects based on sign value rather than use value. Consumerism is a phenomenon present in everyday life, including within Indonesian society. It manifests not only in real-world interactions but also on social media—a space that can currently be characterized as a form of "social commerce." This study aims to understand the nature of consumerism among TikTok users. It employs a qualitative research design with a phenomenological approach to gain deeper insight into the informants' experiences. The findings indicate that factors such as the intensity of TikTok usage, content appeal, creator influence, viral trends, simulated reality, and transaction convenience contribute to increased consumerism among users. These results highlight the negative aspects of social media when usage—originally oriented toward entertainment and social interaction—evolves into a drive to follow trends and make purchases based on the fulfillment of desires rather than actual need or use value. Keywords: Consumerism, TikTok, Dark Side, Social Media
