Abstract

The withdrawal of the United States from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018 and the reimplementation of the maximum pressure policy increased economic and political pressure on Iran. In this context, the Strait of Hormuz became a strategically significant area as it serves as one of the world's most important international energy distribution and maritime transportation routes. This study aims to analyze Iran’s geostrategy in the Strait of Hormuz following the United States’ withdrawal from the JCPOA during the 2018–2019 period and to examine whether this geostrategy reflects behavior consistent with the logic of defensive realism. This study employs a qualitative research method using library research as its data collection technique. The findings reveal that Iran utilized its geographical position in the Strait of Hormuz through three main forms of geostrategy, namely threats to global energy routes, control of maritime traffic, and demonstrations of military capability and deterrence. The study also finds that Iran’s geostrategy during the 2018–2019 period reflects the characteristics of defensive realism, as it emerged in response to external threats, prioritized security and state survival, relied on defensive and limited strategies, and did not demonstrate ambitions to alter the status quo or establish regional hegemony.
