Abstract

The oil and gas industry in Nigeria has been dominated by Shell since 1937, when the British colonial government granted exclusive rights to this company to explore across Nigeria. Shell was the operator of the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) under a Joint Venture with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and other International Oil Companies. Despite its dominance, liabilities of foreignness remain a challenge for Shell, which have caused financial loss. Oil theft and uncertainty are major factors behind Shell’s decision to divest. As a result, the research question: how does Shell maintain its dominance in Nigeria through a perspective of Political Bargaining Model, focusing on Shell's operations in the Niger Delta (2019–2025). This study employs the Monopolistic Advantage Theory and Political Bargaining Model to examine how Shell can preserve its dominance in an unstable country. The methodology employed in this research is document analysis which gathers primary sources from Shell, NNPC, and the Nigerian government. This study found that Shell maintains its dominance through two mechanisms, such as creating the Shell Contractor Fund to form alliances with local enterprises and forming a strategic relationship with President Tinubu. Keywords: Shell, Nigeria, Oil and Gas Industry, Monopolistic Advantage Theory, Political Bargaining Model
