Abstract
The traditional shallot processing, which is slow, laborious, and carries the risk of causing eye irritation, drives the need for mechanization to improve the productivity of the MSME sector. This study aims to design and realize an automatic shallot slicing machine with a target capacity of 10 kg/hr. The design methodology applied is based on Ulrich's concept development model, with 3D model visualization and precise engineering drawings using CAD Solidworks. The mechanical specifications of the machine integrate an AISI 1045 steel frame, an A27 belt transmission, and a 12 mm shaft. The automation system is designed using an Arduino Uno microcontroller connected to an ultrasonic sensor to detect shallots inside the hopper and a relay module to activate a 90-Watt AC drive motor with a blade rotation speed of 416.67 rpm. Actual testing shows that the machine can operate stably and generate an average production capacity of 17,62 kg/hr, reaching 176,2% of the target design capacity. The application of a stopping time in the form of a static delay for 90 seconds after the sensor no longer detects materials is proven to be highly significant in minimizing leftover shallots in the cutting chamber, leaving an average of only 2.9 bulbs per test cycle, although it extends the total operational time per cycle.
