Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis and damage to the small intestinal mucosa. This study evaluated the effects of goat milk kefir supplemented with honey on cecal microbiota and small intestinal histopathology in a T2DM mouse model. Thirty male Sprague-Dawley mice were divided into a healthy control group, a diabetes control group, and three intervention groups that received different doses of goat milk kefir supplemented with honey for 14 days. The counts of coliforms and Lactobacillus spp. in the cecum were analyzed using the Total Plate Count method, while intestinal histopathology was assessed from sections stained with hematoxylin-eosin. Kefir supplementation reduced coliform counts and increased the population of Lactobacillus spp. compared to the diabetic control group, with the greatest effect observed at the highest dose. Significant differences in intestinal mucosal area were found between the groups (p = 0.017), and mice treated with kefir exhibited improved mucosal morphology. These findings suggest that honey-enriched goat milk kefir can improve the large intestinal microbiota profile and intestinal histopathology in T2DM mice.
