Abstract
Eating disorders among adolescents arise from the interplay of psychosocial factors and individual characteristics, including body image perception, celebrity worship, peer pressure, nutritional status, sex, and nutritional knowledge. This study examined how these variables relate to eating disorder risk among students at SMAN 12 Kota Tangerang, using an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. From a population of 720 tenth- and eleventh-grade students, 153 respondents were selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were collected using the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ), Celebrity Attitude Scale (CAS), Peer Pressure Scale for Adolescents (PPSA), Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26), a nutrition knowledge questionnaire, and anthropometric measurement (BMI-for-age), then analyzed with the Chi-square test. Most respondents showed negative body image (79.1%) and high celebrity worship (54.9%), while peer pressure was mostly low (69.3%), nutritional status largely normal (73.9%), and nutritional knowledge generally good (64.1%); still, 68.6% were classified at risk of eating disorders. Significant associations were found between eating disorder risk and body image (p<0.001), peer pressure (p<0.001), and sex (p=0.026), but not with celebrity worship, nutritional status, or nutritional knowledge. These findings highlight the importance of fostering positive body image and reducing peer pressure to prevent eating disorders in adolescents.
