Abstract
FAMILY COMMUNICATION PATTERNS IN BROKEN HOME FAMILIES IN SHAPING ADOLESCENTS’ PERCEPTIONS IN DETERMINING THE CRITERIA FOR AN IDEAL LIFE PARTNER IN PONDOK GEDE DISTRICT, BEKASI CITY SEKAR AYU LESTARI ABSTRACT The phenomenon of broken home families caused by divorce gives rise to dysfunctional communication and emotional distance between parents and adolescents, so that they grow up without a whole model of relationships. The main problem is how family communication patterns shape the way adolescents interpret relationships and formulate the criteria for an ideal life partner. This study aims to analyze these patterns and to understand adolescents’ perceptions in determining those criteria. The theory used is Joseph A. DeVito’s Interpersonal Communication Theory, namely openness, empathy, supportiveness, positiveness, and equality. The method is qualitative with Martin Heidegger’s phenomenological approach. The subjects numbered nine informants, namely three adolescents from broken home families in Pondok Gede District, Bekasi City, each reinforced by two source triangulations, a parent and a close friend. The results show that these patterns are not yet optimal. Openness does not disappear but becomes selective, redirected to parties outside the nuclear family felt to be safe. Empathy actually grows stronger from being insufficiently understood at home. Supportiveness appears merely as advice without validating feelings, while positiveness is formed through self adjustment that makes informants more mature and independent. Openness and equality are the least fulfilled aspect because the space to express opinions is symbolic, so informants choose silence. Differences in this space place the patterns along a range from The Balanced Split Pattern, which remains two-way, through The Unbalanced Split Pattern, dominated by one party, to The Monopoly Pattern, where authority lies entirely with the parents. The most prominent finding is their tendency to avoid prospective partners from similar broken home backgrounds, differing from the general tendency in partner selection. The criteria that emerge are reflective, namely a figure who is communicative, open, honest, patient, emotionally mature, and able to provide security, not as an emotional outlet but as a foundation for a healthy relationship. This study concludes that family communication experiences become adolescents’ main consideration in interpreting relationships and determining their criteria for an ideal life partner. Keywords: Adolescent, Broken Home, Ideal Life Partner Criteria, Interpersonal Communication, Perception.
