Abstract
This study aims to analyze the buckling phenomenon in the lift cylinder rod of a 7.5-ton capacity crane using the Finite Element Method (FEM). Buckling is a critical structural failure that is highly likely to occur in luffing systems because the rod components are subjected to significant axial compressive loads. The analysis was conducted using a linear eigenvalue buckling approach in ANSYS software with AISI 1045 steel material. Variations were applied to four operational angles 110°, 130°, 150°, and 170° which resulted in different rod lengths and loading conditions. Simulation results reveal that the critical load (Fcr) at a 110° radius (1230 mm length) is 11.187,88 kN, at a 130° radius (1392 mm length) is 9.511,47 kN, at a 150° radius (1507 mm length) is 8.522,79 kN, and at an 170° radius (1568 mm length) is 8,264.595 kN. The conclusion of this study indicates that as the operational angle and rod length increase, the critical buckling load decreases, signifying a reduction in structural stability. Furthermore, the deformation patterns for the 1st and 2nd orders typically occur at the upper end of the rod, while the 3rd order deformation occurs in the middle section of the rod.
