Abstract
ABSTRACT Family communication plays a crucial role in maintaining family harmony amid the increasing prevalence of family conflicts. In intergenerational families, differences in age, life experiences, family roles, values, communication styles, and adaptation to technological and social changes may affect family communication and, consequently, family harmony. Therefore, family communication deserves further investigation in the context of intergenerational families. This study examines the effect of family communication on the level of family harmony in intergenerational families in Lebak Bulus Urban Village, South Jakarta, Indonesia, using the Family Communication Patterns Theory. A quantitative approach was employed by distributing questionnaires to 100 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using simple linear regression, Pearson's Product-Moment correlation, the coefficient of determination, and a t-test using SPSS version 25. The results indicate that family communication has a positive and significant effect on the level of family harmony (r = .906, p < .001), explaining 82.1% of the variance in family harmony. The findings also reveal a tendency toward a consensual family communication pattern, with Generation X obtaining the highest scores in family communication, family harmony, and relationship strength compared with the other generations. The findings suggest that better family communication is associated with higher levels of family harmony in intergenerational families. These findings highlight the role of family communication as an important mechanism for bridging intergenerational differences and maintaining family harmony.
