Abstract

This study aims to analyze the aerodynamic characteristics of Flettner rotor using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method with steady RANS approach and SST k-ω turbulence model. Validation was performed by comparing simulation results with experimental data from (Garenaux et al., 2020) and numerical data from (Kwon et al., 2022) at various spin ratios (SR 1 - 4). Mesh convergence study showed that medium grid with 3,760,127 cells yielded 0.32% error against experimental data. Research variations included steady vs transient comparison, bottom boundary condition effects (no-slip vs symmetry), disc plate thickness variations, and disc configuration variations on six different rotors (rotor Reference, V, W, X, Y, Z). Validation results showed excellent agreement for C_l/C_d ratio with errors below 1% at all points with experimental data. Steady vs transient analysis showed similar trends, indicating that steady approach is sufficient for simulations. Boundary condition comparison proved that symmetry condition produced overly optimistic predictions with C_l/C_d of 6.30 at SR 2, far above no-slip condition of 3.91 which is closer to experimental conditions. Disc plate thickness variations had minimal influence on rotor performance, indicating that reference disc thickness of 0.005 m is the most optimal. Disc configuration analysis showed that rotor V with discs at both top and bottom ends was the most optimal configuration, capable of increasing C_l/C_d by up to 52% at SR 2 (5.96 vs 3.91) and 22% at SR 4 (2.76 vs 2.26) compared to reference rotor. Pressure contour analysis confirmed that optimal disc configuration effectively retained flow leakage and created uniform pressure distribution, while configurations without discs or with mid-span discs without end discs experienced flow leakage that degraded performance. This study proves that proper disc configuration selection is crucial for optimizing Flettner rotor aerodynamic performance.
