Abstract
Leprosy is one of the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) that continues to pose a global public health challenge. Indonesia ranks among the three countries with the highest number of new leprosy cases worldwide. Banten Province has the highest prevalence on Java Island. South Tangerang City, which includes slum settlements and substandard housing that do not meet health requirements, may provide favorable conditions for the survival of Mycobacterium leprae. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between physical housing conditions and the incidence of leprosy in South Tangerang City in 2026. A quantitative study with a case-control design was conducted from March–June 2026. The sample comprised 64 respondents, including 32 cases and 32 controls, selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through direct observation and environmental measurements using observation forms, a lux meter, an air quality monitor, and a measuring tape. Univariate and bivariate analyses were performed using the chisquare test at a 95% confidence level. Ventilation (p=0.023; OR=3.7), lighting (p=0.021; OR=4.8), housing density (p=0.021; OR=4.0), and humidity (p=0.001; OR=9.0) were significantly associated with leprosy incidence, whereas wall type (p=1.000) and temperature (p=0.210) were not. Improving housing quality, community education, and environmental health surveillance are essential for environment-based leprosy control.
