Abstract
Pesticide exposure may lead to both acute and chronic health effects, particularly among vulnerable populations such as farmers. Contact dermatitis is an acute skin disorder that can result from exposure to irritant or allergenic substances, including pesticides. Although the exact prevalence still remains unclear, it may impose social, psychological, and economic burdens on individuals. This study was conducted to examine the association between pesticide use and complaints of contact dermatitis. A cross-sectional design was employed in Nanggerang Village, Cicurug District, Sukabumi Regency, from May to June 2026. The study involved 102 farmers selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviewer administered questionnaires and analyzed using logistic regression. The findings showed that the use of pesticides containing ≥ 3 active ingredients increased the likelihood of contact dermatitis complaints by 10.258 times (95%: CI: 3,454-30,464). Most pesticides identified belonged to the organophosphate, pyrethroid, and carbamate classes. No confounding variables were detected in the analysis. However, poor personal hygiene was associated with a higher risk of contact dermatitis (POR=4.593; 95% CI=1.371–15.389) in the multivariate analysis. There is no interaction between pesticide use and personal hygiene. Farmers are encouraged to select pesticide products, maintain personal hygiene practices, and consistently use PPE.
