Abstract

The Cheetah Project is an ambitious initiative undertaken by the Government of India to reintroduce the cheetah, a species declared extinct since 1952. This study employs the framework of Green Theory as a critical lens to analyze the socio-political construction of the Cheetah Project, which has been utilized as a political instrument for conservation and a means of building national branding by the Indian Government. Examined through a critical-qualitative approach, this research specifically focuses its analytical lens on the mechanism of animal commodification, which is inextricably linked with the paradigm of managerial anthropocentrism and the impacts of green grabbing. The findings reveal that the Cheetah Project is a manifestation of instrumental anthropocentrism that reduces the intrinsic value of wildlife into a political branding commodity and a transnational diplomatic asset to pursue political prestige and state legitimacy. This cosmetic conservation strategy, which completely disregards the animals' biological boundaries, not only results in the neglect of animal welfare but also culminates in socio-spatial consequences through green grabbing, leading to the social exclusion and marginalization of the local indigenous Sahariya community around Kuno National Park.
