Abstract

This study compares the performance and security of HMAC-SHA-2 and KMAC-SHA-3 in the implementation of Time-based One Time Password (TOTP) for Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). The tested algorithms include HMAC-SHA-256, HMAC-SHA-512, KMACXOF128, and KMACXOF256 using 6-, 8-, and 10-digit codes. Performance testing covers generation and verification time, CPU and RAM utilization, and multi-threaded throughput across 1,000,000 executions. Security testing evaluates the avalanche effect, NIST Statistical Test Suite, as well as mathematical analysis of collision, preimage, and second-preimage resistance. KMACXOF256 in an 8-digit configuration achieved the fastest average accumulated generation and verification time at 0.05338 seconds per secret key. HMAC-SHA-2 remains superior in multi-threaded throughput, whereas all algorithms demonstrated an avalanche effect close to 50% along with adequate cryptographic resistance. KMAC-SHA-3 is a viable alternative to HMAC-SHA-2, particularly in single-threaded environments.
