Abstract

The phenomenon of femicide in South Africa has become a national crisis that must be addressed immediately. The South African government has made various efforts; however, due to uneven implementation, limited funding, and weak inter-agency accountability, there have been no significant results in addressing the current phenomenon of femicide. Therefore, the involvement of international organizations is needed to assist South Africa in addressing this phenomenon. The objective of this study is to analyze the role of UN Women—an international organization mandated to promote gender equality—in addressing cases of femicide in South Africa from 2020 to 2024. This study employs a qualitative research method, utilizing both primary and secondary data collection techniques through interviews and a review of relevant literature. This study draws on two theoretical frameworks: the theory of International Organizations proposed by Clive Archer and the theory of Institutional Feminism. Furthermore, this study also employs femicide as a concept to explain the extreme form of gender-based violence against women that arises from unequal power relations, patriarchal culture, and weak institutional protection for women. The results indicate that UN Women has implemented various progressive and comprehensive efforts to address the phenomenon of femicide in South Africa. These efforts are not only carried out through campaigns and public awareness initiatives, but also through policy strengthening, institutional support, women’s empowerment, and various programs that address the structural root causes of the problem, such as gender inequality and patriarchal culture, as preventive measures against gender-based violence and femicide.
