Abstract
This study aims to improve the effectiveness of the leaf shredding machine at KSM 3R Flamboyan Reni through improvements on the most dominant losses factor and to measure the reliability of the related components. Machine performance was evaluated using Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), Six Big Losses, and the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle approach. Initial measurement results (before improvement) showed a low average OEE value of 44.43%, caused by Setup and Adjustment Losses as the dominant factor at 8.21%. During the initial preparation before the machine operates, the setup time is considerably high because the operator must disassemble and sharpen the blades, which dull rapidly due to scraping leftover twigs, stone particles, or hard sand contained in the leaf waste. This condition becomes the main contributor to machine ineffectiveness due to the low hardness and wear resistance of the blade material. As a solution, material improvement was implemented through a Heat Treatment process (Hardening & Tempering) to increase the metal hardness of the blades. Post-improvement (after improvement), the average OEE moderately increased to 55.26% (an increase of 10.83%), followed by a rise in MTBF from 609.55 to 1,018.6 minutes, and MTTF from 794.85 to 1,697.6 minutes. This increase in effectiveness indicates that the improvement is reasonably capable of enhancing machine effectiveness and component reliability. Furthermore, KSM is expected to apply this method as an operational standard consistently and sustainably, provided it is not constrained by operational costs or time limitations in outsourcing the heat treatment process.
