Abstract
Imports are one of the forms of international trade activities carried out by a country to fulfill domestic needs that cannot be optimally met by domestic production. Sugar is a strategic commodity in Indonesia with a high level of demand for both household consumption and industrial use. To examine this phenomenon, a study applied the Error Correction Model (ECM) to time-series data (1987–2024) from BPS, FAO, and the World Bank to measure the impact of production, domestic consumption, global prices, and exchange rate fluctuations on the quantity of national sugar imports. The study's empirical findings confirm that domestic consumption is the only factor with a positive and significant impact on the increase in sugar import volume, both in the short and long term. Conversely, local production, international prices, and the exchange rate have not shown significant impacts, confirming that Indonesia's dependence on sugar imports is driven solely by the imbalance between surging domestic demand and the failure of national production capacity.
