Abstract

Background: Down syndrome is a genetic condition that has a significant impact on children’s physical, cognitive, and motor development. This condition is caused by a chromosomal abnormality involving an extra copy of chromosome 21. In the medical field, Down syndrome is known as trisomy 21 and is one of the most common chromosomal disorders. Studies indicate that approximately 1 in 1,000 to 1,100 births worldwide involves Down Syndrome. Objective: This study aims to determine the physiotherapy management for cases of down syndrome. Research Method: This is a descriptive case study of Patient A, a 10-year-and-4-month-old boy diagnosed with down syndrome, who has limitations in performing activities of daily living independently and exhibits poor balance maintenance. Anamnesis data were obtained through a parent-administered questionnaire, with the primary complaint being the child’s limited ability to perform certain activities of daily living independently. Results: Results from three intervention sessions using Sensory Integration, Hydrotherapy, and trunk control stimulation showed no improvement in the child’s functional motor skills. Additionally, a slight improvement was observed in sensory system responses, specifically the vestibular and proprioceptive systems. Conclusion: The patient with down syndrome was assessed using the Sensory Profile 2 for sensory systems, Range of Joint Motion, and the Beighton Scale for joint laxity and Pediatric Quality of Life for activities of daily living to assess their daily independence. This assessment is designed to identify functional issues as a basis for physical therapy interventions. Interventions include sensory integration, hydrotherapy, and trunk control stimulation to optimally improve motor function and sensory response. Keywords: Down Syndrome, Physiotherapy, Sensory Integration, Joint Laxity, Sensory Profile.
