Abstract
Background: Bronchopneumonia is an inflammatory condition affecting lung tissue, characterized by patchy infiltrates in the alveoli, which often leads to excessive secretions in the respiratory tract in infants. If not properly managed, this condition can cause serious complications such as apnea, pleural effusion, and sepsis. For a patient named An. A, aged 8 months, the main challenge was the inability to clear secretions independently, thus requiring specific intervention measures. Method: This study adopted a case study approach in the nursing care of An. A, who was diagnosed with bronchopneumonia at the General Hospital (RSU) of South Tangerang City from May 2–4, 2026. To collect data, interviews, observations, physical examinations, and a review of medical records were conducted. Results: The primary nursing issues identified were ineffective airway clearance related to airway hypersecretion, hyperthermia related to the infectious process, and a risk of nutritional deficit evidenced by psychological factors (reluctance to eat). The primary interventions focused on airway management through chest physiotherapy and the semi-Fowler’s position, supported by inhalation therapy (nebulizer), nutritional monitoring, oral hygiene, and body temperature monitoring. After implementation for 3x24 hours, the patient’s oxygenation status showed stability with an SpO2 of 100%, significantly reduced (minimal) rhonchi, a normal body temperature (36.4°C), and improved nutritional status with an increase in body weight from 8.2 kg to 8.85 kg. Conclusion: The implementation of comprehensive nursing care with an emphasis on key chest physiotherapy interventions and collaboration in the administration of medication therapy proved effective in addressing respiratory tract clearance issues and preventing further complications in infants with broncho-pneumonia.
