Abstract

Pneumonia is a respiratory disease that causes acute inflammation of lung tissue, with the number of cases still increasing. A common comorbidity in pneumonia patients is type 2 diabetes mellitus which requires combination therapy with antibiotics and antidiabetics. However, this combination may lead to drug interactions causing serious side effects such as decreased blood regulation and prolonged hospitalization. This study aims to analyze the relationship between actual drug interactions of antibiotics and antidiabetic on blood glucose levels and length of hospitalization in pneumonia patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at RSUP Persahabatan. This study was conducted from August 2025 to May 2026 with a cross-sectional study design. Drug interaction analysis was performed using drugs interaction checker tools and accredited journals. Sixteen patients experienced actual interactions between antibiotics and antidiabetics. There was no significant relationship between actual interactions of antibiotics and antidiabetics and blood glucose levels (P-value >0,05) but there was a significant relationship between actual interaction of antibiotics and antidiabetics with the length of hospitalization (p-value < 0,05; OR = 4,767; 95% CI = 1,137-19,977). Patients experiencing actual drug interactions were at risk of longer hospitalizations. However, this interpretation is still limited by the relatively small sample size.
