Abstract
Buckling phenomena in tubular structures such as drill collars represent a critical issue in drilling operations, as they can lead to reduced efficiency and potential equipment failure. One of the parameters suspected to influence buckling behavior is wall thickness. However, the effect of wall thickness on critical buckling load and deformation patterns has not been extensively studied. This study aims to analyze the effect of wall thickness variation on the critical buckling load and deformation patterns of a drill collar under vertical well conditions using the Finite Element Method (FEM), and to compare the simulation results with classical analytical theories developed by Lubinski, Wang, and Wu. The results show that wall thickness affects the critical buckling load; as the thickness increases, so does the critical load. The critical load is more significantly affected by the cross-sectional moment of inertia, which is also influenced by the inner and outer diameters. Furthermore, the deformation patterns indicate that the first and second modes exhibit local buckling with relatively similar deformation values, while the third mode shows sinusoidal buckling for all thickness variations. The FEM simulation results also show good agreement with analytical theory, with a deviation of less than 10%. It can be concluded that wall thickness are directly proportional to the critical buckling load.
