Abstract

Hair loss is a common problem often treated using minoxidil, but its use can cause side effects and dependency. Moringa oleifera L. (moringa) leaves contain bioactive compounds, including tannins, which have potential to promote hair growth. This study aimed to analyze the effect of gel formulations containing moringa leaf extract on hair growth in male New Zealand rabbits as a natural alternative for hair care, including the determination of total tannin content and evaluation of the optimal extract concentration. Moringa leaf extract was obtained using ultrasonic-assisted extraction, and total tannin content was measured using UV-Vis spectrophotometry with gallic acid as a standard. The extract was formulated into gels with concentrations of F1 (4%), F2 (6%), and F3 (8%). Hair growth was assessed over 21 days using hair length, weight, and diameter as parameters. Results showed that the total tannin content of moringa leaf extract was 36.9896 mg GAE/g extract. The F3 (8%) formula produced the highest hair length and weight, with a significant difference in hair weight (p<0.05), while hair length and diameter did not differ significantly (p>0.05). Overall, variations in extract concentration showed a weak and non significant correlation with hair growth, although the 8% concentration tended to provide the most optimal response.
