Abstract
Shafts are critical components in power transmission systems that operate under dynamic loads and shocks, making them susceptible to cracking or fracture due to sudden bending and torsional stresses. Therefore, heat treatment is necessary to achieve a balance between hardness and toughness. This study aims to determine the effect of tempering temperature on the hardness and impact strength of AISI 1040 steel. The method used involves a heat treatment process consisting of quenching at 850°C and tempering at varying temperatures of 250°C, 350°C, 450°C, 550°C, and 650°C, with a constant aging time of 120 minutes. Testing was conducted using the Charpy method for impact toughness and the Vickers method for hardness, as well as FEA simulation to examine the impact fracture mechanism. The results showed that an increase in tempering temperature caused the impact energy value to increase, while the hardness value decreased. The highest impact energy value was 270 J at 650°C, while the lowest hardness value was 96.33 HV at 650°C. Meanwhile, the results of the FEA simulation show that at temperatures of 450°C and 650°C, there is an increase in plastic deformation and impact energy. Thus, it can be concluded that the tempering temperature has a significant effect on the mechanical properties of AISI 1040 steel.
