Abstract
Irrational antibiotic use remains a significant issue as it contributes to increasing antimicrobial resistance. In children, antibiotic use decisions are generally heavily influenced by mothers, thus maternal knowledge, attitudes, and behavior are important factors to consider. Differences in children's age are thought to influence parenting patterns and the way mothers administer antibiotics. This study aimed to analyze differences in maternal knowledge, attitudes, and behavior regarding the appropriateness of antibiotic use in toddlers and children aged 6–18 years at the Cinere Community Health Center. The study used a quantitative approach with a comparative cross-sectional design. A sample of 32 respondents, consisting of 16 mothers of toddlers and 16 mothers of children aged 6–18 years, was selected using a convenience sampling technique. Data were obtained through questionnaires and prescription reviews in medical records to assess the appropriateness of antibiotic use. Univariate analysis is presented in the form of frequency distributions and percentages, while bivariate analysis was performed using the Mann–Whitney test with a significance level of 0.05. The results showed that mothers of toddlers were more likely to have good knowledge (68.75%), while mothers of children aged 6–18 years were predominantly in the poor knowledge category (56.25%). Positive attitudes were found in all mothers of toddlers (100%) and most mothers of children aged 6–18 years (87.5%). Good behavior was recorded in all mothers of toddlers (100%) and in 75% of mothers of children aged 6–18 years. The Mann–Whitney test showed significant differences in knowledge (p=0.001), attitudes (p=0.042), and behavior (p=0.003). These findings indicate that mothers of toddlers tend to be more appropriate in antibiotic use than mothers of children aged 6–18 years.
