Abstract

This study investigates the effect of hardener ratio variation on the mechanical properties and failure mechanisms of hybrid composite materials reinforced with fiberglass and carbon fiber using an epoxy matrix. The hardener ratios employed were 1:1, 1:0.5, and 1:0.3, with specimens fabricated using the hand lay-up method, followed by tensile testing in accordance with ASTM D3039 and microstructural analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that the hardener ratio significantly influences the mechanical properties of the hybrid composite, where the 1:0.5 ratio exhibits the highest Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) of 170.7 MPa, followed by 1:1 with 157.8 MPa and 1:0.3 with 77.4 MPa. The optimal performance at the 1:0.5 ratio is attributed to the formation of an effective crosslinking structure, which enhances load transfer between the matrix and the fibers. SEM analysis reveals that the 1:1 ratio is dominated by matrix cracking, fiber pull-out, and delamination, indicating brittle behavior, whereas the 1:0.5 ratio shows dominant fiber breakage, reflecting improved interfacial bonding. In contrast, the 1:0.3 ratio exhibits non-uniform matrix distribution (resin-rich areas), weak interfacial bonding, and dominant adhesive failure due to incomplete curing. Therefore, the 1:0.5 hardener ratio can be considered the optimum composition, providing the best combination of tensile strength, interfacial bonding quality, and load transfer efficiency in laminated composite structures.
