Abstract
This study analyzes how Taiwan's dominance in the semiconductor industry affects US defense policy in East Asia. Taiwan plays a central role in the global semiconductor supply chain through TSMC, which controls the world's advanced chip production. The United States' dependence on Taiwanese chips has a direct impact on its strategic and military interests because semiconductors are an important component in modern civil technology and defense systems. The rivalry between the United States and China increases the risk of supply chain disruptions and heightens the urgency for the United States to maintain stability in Taiwan. This study uses the theory of Complex Interdependence to explain how economic dependence, extensive channels of interaction, and sensitivity to non-military issues shape U.S. defense strategy. The results show that the United States responds to Taiwan's dominance by strengthening domestic production through the CHIPS and Science Act, enhancing military cooperation with Taiwan, and strengthening alliances with Japan and South Korea. Taiwan's dominance in the semiconductor industry has proven to be a major factor in sharpening U.S. defense policy in East Asia. This study confirms that technological interdependence is now an important element in regional geopolitical dynamics. Keywords: Taiwan, Semiconductors, TSMC, United States, Complex Interdependence
