Abstract
Synthetic surfactants such as Sodium Lauryl Sulphate have the potential to irritate and negatively impact the environment. Therefore, biosurfactant as a natural alternative is needed for safety reasons. Button ginger is presumed to possess biosurfactant activity based on its saponin content. However, its characteristics as a biosurfactant have not yet been evaluated. This research aims to determine the characteristics of the 70% ethanol extract of button ginger as a biosurfactant and its potential application in shampoo. biosurfactant characteristics, shampoo formulation, physical examination and HET-CAM irritation test were assessed to determine. The result showed that the extract had a yield of 12,52%, total saponin content 65,63 ± 4,52%, organoleptic exhibited changed, mass density 1,105 ± 0,01, pH extract 4,15 ± 0,06, high solubilty in aquadest and low in ethanol, HLB value 9,77, index emulsification 50,02 ± 3,28%, protease activity 2,43 ± 0,05 U/mL, surface tension 40 - 50 dyne/cm with CMC value 0,5%. The results of the shampoo formulation evaluation showed a pH of 4,91 ± 0,01, viscoscity 7429 ± 0,94 cP, foam height 5,17 ± 0,29 cm, surface tension 35–40 dyne/cm with CMC value 1%. Both extract and shampoo no cause irritation (score 0). Statistical analysis showed no significant differences for most parameters (p > 0,05), except for the emulsification index and surface tension (p < 0,05). Overall, pacing pentul demonstrates effective, safe, and environmentally friendly biosurfactant potential for shampoo formulation.
