Abstract
The global climate crisis and rising greenhouse gas emissions are pushing countries worldwide to transition from dependence on fossil fuels to clean and sustainable energy. Indonesia, as a developing country, faces the dual challenge of meeting its growing national energy needs while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions in line with international climate commitments. In this context, environmental diplomacy has become a strategic instrument for the Indonesian government to support the energy transition agenda through international cooperation. This study aims to analyze how environmental diplomacy carried out by the Indonesian government during the 2019–2024 administration of Joko Widodo can support the energy transition through bilateral cooperation with China. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, with data collection techniques including interviews and documentation from primary and secondary sources. The results show that Indonesia’s environmental diplomacy with China is realized through cooperation in the fields of renewable energy, electric vehicle development, clean energy investment, and green technology transfer. This cooperation serves not only as an effort to fulfill economic interests but also as a diplomatic strategy to accelerate the national energy transition, reduce carbon emissions, and strengthen Indonesia’s energy security. Thus, environmental diplomacy plays a crucial role as an instrument of Indonesian foreign policy in integrating domestic development interests with the global climate change agenda.
