Abstract
Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), anxiety, and social acceptance are interrelated psychosocial aspects in adolescent development in the digital age, especially with the increasing use of social media. This study aims to examine the relationship between Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) and levels of anxiety and social acceptance in adolescents. This is a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. The research sample consisted of 320 students from State Senior High Schools 62, 51, and 58 in East Jakarta, selected through stratified random sampling. The measurement tools used included FoMO-12, Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and Adolescent Multidimensional Social Competence Questionnaire (AMSC-Q). Data analysis was performed using the chi-square test. The findings revealed that no statistically significant association was identified between FoMO and anxiety (p = 0.121; p > 0.05) or between FoMO and social acceptance (p = 0.715; p > 0.05). Nevertheless, most participants exhibited moderate to high levels of FoMO and anxiety and demonstrated a high degree of engagement with social media. These results suggest that FoMO should not be regarded as the only determinant directly influencing adolescents’ anxiety and social acceptance, but rather as one component of a broader and more intricate psychosocial dynamic within the context of adolescent development in the digital era.
