Abstract
Low Birth Weight (LBW) infants are classified as high-risk neonates due to their susceptibility to physiological instability, which is influenced by the immaturity of organ system functions, limited energy reserves, and an adaptive capacity to the extrauterine environment that remains underdeveloped. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of nesting care in stabilizing physiological parameters among LBW infants receiving treatment in a perinatology unit. A descriptive case study design was applied to two premature neonates who exhibited respiratory instability, fluctuating body temperature, feeding intolerance, and an increased risk of infection. Nesting care was administered continuously for three days by positioning the infants in a flexed posture that mimics the intrauterine environment to enhance comfort and reduce physiological stress. Physiological parameters, including respiratory rate, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and body temperature, were monitored before and after the intervention. The findings demonstrated consistent improvement in both infants, indicated by decreased heart and respiratory rates, increased oxygen saturation reaching 99%, and stable body temperature within the normal range. These results suggest that nesting care effectively supports physiological stability and promotes energy conservation in LBW infants. It can be concluded that nesting care is a simple, cost-effective, and evidence-based intervention that can be integrated into routine neonatal nursing practice.
