Abstract
The development of generative artificial intelligence has made ChatGPT not only an academic tool, but also a medium of emotional communication for Generation Z. This study aims to analyze how Gen Z perceives the use of ChatGPT as a confidant in fulfilling their need for empathy, which is not fully met in real-world social interactions. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a constructivist paradigm. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews with five Generation Z informants who actively use ChatGPT as a medium for confiding, as well as three psychologist informants as supporters. The informant selection technique used purposive sampling. The results of the study show that ChatGPT is interpreted as an emotionally safe space that is responsive, neutral, and free from judgment. In these interactions, ChatGPT is able to simulate cognitive empathy, emotional empathy, and empathic concern as described by Goleman. From the perspective of Uses and Gratifications theory, the use of ChatGPT fulfills the needs for companionship, emotional release, relaxation, escape, and information. However, the empathy it provides is limited and cannot fully replace human empathy. Psychologists emphasize that the use of ChatGPT is adaptive in the short term, but has the potential to cause emotional dependence if it replaces interpersonal relationships. This study concludes that ChatGPT functions as an alternative for fulfilling empathy for Gen Z, but cannot replace the presence of authentic emotional relationships.
