Abstract
Nursing care in the Emergency Department (ED) require nurses to provide care that is rapid, accurate, and focused on patients’ needs, including pain management. Pain is a subjective experience frequently encountered by patients in the ED and requires nurses’ empathic abilities to ensure optimal management. Pain empathy refers to nurses’ ability to understand and respond to patients’ pain experiences both emotionally and cognitively, playing a crucial role in the quality of pain management and patient safety. This study aimed to identify factors influencing pain empathy among nurses in the Emergency Department of RSUD Tarakan Jakarta. This study employed a cross-sectional design with a total sampling technique involving 36 respondents. Data were collected using the Empathy for Pain Scale (EPS) to measure nurses’ pain empathy. The results showed that most nurses had a moderate level of pain empathy. The results of the logistic regression analysis showed that length of work in the emergency department, nurses’ knowledge and attitudes toward pain management, and pain management training were significant factors influencing nurses’ pain empathy, with p-values < 0.05. Meanwhile, age, gender, and educational level did not show a significant association with nurses’ pain empathy. Therefore, it can be concluded that length of work in the Emergency Department, nurses’ knowledge and attitudes regarding pain management, and pain management training are the main factors influencing the level of nurses’ pain empathy.
