Abstract

The growth of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the coffee sector has increased the demand for more efficient, consistent, and user-friendly packaging systems. In practice, many MSMEs still rely on manual coffee powder filling processes, which often result in inconsistent product weight, limited production capacity, and high dependence on operators. This study aims to design and realize a screw-based (auger) coffee powder filler machine with a material capacity of 4 kg as a practical packaging solution for small-scale industries. The research method is based on an engineering design approach, including user requirement identification, development of several design alternatives, selection of the optimal design using a selection matrix method, detailed CAD-based design, fabrication, and preliminary functional and geometric testing. The designed machine consists of a hopper, screw feeder, main frame, transfer pipe, packaging forming mechanism, and vertical and horizontal sealing systems. The results show that the coffee powder filler machine was successfully realized in the form of a functional prototype that operates in accordance with the design concept. The screw feeding system provides stable material flow, the machine structure meets strength and maintenance requirements, and the packaging system operates in an integrated manner. Therefore, the developed machine demonstrates potential to improve packaging efficiency, consistency, and product professionalism for MSMEs. This study is expected to serve as an initial reference for the development of small-scale powder packaging machines based on mechanical design principles.
