Abstract
This study examines discriminatory expressions toward dark skin color (colorism) through the use of the term “aura magrib” in TikTok content and user interactions in Indonesia. The research is grounded in the increasing circulation of this term in digital spaces, often used jokingly to refer to individuals with darker skin, and the lack of discourse-based studies that examine this phenomenon in depth. The study adopts Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis framework, which examines three key dimensions: text, discursive practice, and socio-cultural practice. A descriptive qualitative method was employed under a critical paradigm. Primary data were gathered through content analysis of seven TikTok videos featuring the term “aura magrib”, and further verified through interview with individual who have relevant personal experiences. The findings reveal that the term “aura magrib” functions as a symbolic expression that subtly reinforces stigma toward darker skin tones through humor, everyday language, and TikTok’s creative features. Although the phrase is often used in a light-hearted tone, it carries discriminatory implications. While some users express resistance to this discourse, the dominant narrative that upholds skin tone hierarchy continues to be reproduced across digital platforms. Keywords: TikTok, Colorism, Aura Magrib, Critical Discourse Analysis.
