Abstract
Background: Body composition, which consists of muscle mass and fat mass, is an important indicator for assessing an individual's health status. Populations such as active student organization members face dual demands of academic and non-academic activities, which can alter their lifestyle patterns, including diet, physical activity levels, and sleep quality. The commonly used Body Mass Index (BMI) measurement has limitations because it cannot differentiate the contribution of muscle mass and fat mass in the body. Therefore, further examination is required to prevent the risk of long-term health issues. Purpose: To determine the relationship between muscle mass and fat mass on BMI among active student organization members of BEM FIKES UPN "Veteran" Jakarta on the 2025 period. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design with 66 respondents from BEM FIKES UPNVJ, in November 2025 at FIKES UPNVJ Limo, selected through purposive sampling. Measurement of muscle mass, fat mass, and BMI was conducted using the InBody Scale. Data analysis involves Spearman's correlation test. Results: The majority of respondents had a normal BMI (54.5%), yet 68.2% of them had low muscle mass (under) and 42.4% had high fat mass (over). There was a significant positive correlation between muscle mass and BMI (r = 0.584; p < 0.001) as well as between fat mass and BMI (r = 0.702; p < 0.001). Conclusion: There is a relationship between muscle mass and BMI as well as between fat mass and BMI, with fat mass contributing more than muscle mass. Therefore, BMI alone is insufficient to visualize health status, body composition measurement and a in-depth analysis of influencing factors are necessary for a more accurate health assessment.
