Abstract
The Russia–Ukraine war has extended beyond the physical battlefield into the digital sphere, where visual representations of extreme violence circulate as part of contemporary war propaganda. The use of FPV drones enables combat footage to be recorded from an operational perspective and widely disseminated through platforms such as YouTube . This study examines public digital reactions to extreme violence depicted in five FPV drone strike videos published on the Magyar Birds YouTube channel. The research employs a mixed methods approach with a sequential exploratory design. Qualitative content analysis based on Krippendorff's framework was conducted to interpret communicative meanings in comments, followed by categorical quantification to map response patterns. The analysis focused on two dimensions of media desensitization cognitive and emotional along with explicit support for violence. The findings reveal a dominance of cognitive responses characterized by normalization of violence and tactical-strategic interpretations. Variations in visual intensity, including footage involving human targets, did not significantly alter response patterns. This study concludes that audience desensitization is shaped through social construction in comment spaces reinforced by platform mechanisms, not merely visual exposure. Digital war propaganda operates through audience participation in collectively producing and stabilizing meanings of violence.
