Abstract
Background: Upper extremity function plays role in daily, academic, and practical activities of physiotherapy students. Repetitive upper extremity activity without optimal physical condition may increase the potential of upper extremity functional impairment. Objective: To analyze the relationship of arm segmental composition and handgrip strength with potential upper extremity functional impairment among physiotherapy students at UPN “Veteran” Jakarta. Methods: This study used a descriptive cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 176 students selected using purposive sampling. Arm segmental composition was measured using Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA), handgrip strength was measured using a handgrip dynamometer, and potential upper extremity functional impairment was assessed using the Quick Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (QuickDASH) questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Spearman correlation. Results: The results showed a highly significant relationship between handgrip strength and QuickDASH scores (p < 0.001). Arm lean mass and arm fat mass also showed significant relationships with QuickDASH scores (p < 0.05). Conclusion: There is a relationship between arm segmental composition (lean mass and fat mass) and handgrip strength with potential upper extremity functional impairment. Physiotherapy students are encouraged to engage in regular physical activity to improve muscle strength and maintain body composition to prevent upper extremity functional impairment.
